Premier League - Crystal Palace and Newcastle draw as Alan Pardew faces former club

Premier League, Selhurst Park - Crystal Palace 1 (Campbell 71') Newcastle 1 (Cisse 42')

Substitute Yannick Bolasie set up Frazier Campbell's equaliser to cancel out Papiss Cisse's opener as Newcastle and Crystal Palace drew 1-1 at Selhurt Park.

It was the first time Alan Pardew had faced Newcastle United since he left the club to takeover at Crystal Palace. Palace started the better of the two sides, but neither side managed to force a keeper into making a save in the first half hour.

Newcastle broke the deadlock when Daryl Janmaat rushed to the byline and crossed accurately for Papiss Cisse, free in the box. He did not have to leap for the ball and powered in a corner into the near top corner.

In the second half, Palace struggled to create until they introduced Dwight Gayle and Yannick Bolasie. With 20 minutes to go, Bolasie's fine cross was finished at close range by Frazier Campbell.

Newcastle kept their calm and weathered a storm of Palace pressure. Remy Cabella was withdrawn for Paul Dummett, to shore up the side, and Newcastle left with the point they appeared to be playing for.

MATCHCAST: FULL MATCH STATS AND COMMENTARY

TALKING POINT

Alan Pardew looks on course to secure Palace's Premier League status. Things were up in the air when he arrived, but he has lifted Palace away from the drop zone. Now he is able to call on both Wilfried Zaha and Bolasie - back from the AfCON - he should be able to get Palace to fire their way to safety.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Tim Krul (Newcastle United): He was called into action, apart from the goal for which he could do nothing - at the very start and end of the game. He was alert both times, and his final save against Hangeland was a vital stop to keep Newcastle in the game.
