Why Manchester United signing Antoine Griezmann for £85million makes perfect sense.

Less than a year ago Antoine Griezmann committed his future to Atletico Madrid by signing a new contract. Fast forward seven months and it now looks certain the Frenchman will leave for Manchester United.

The 26-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal that would tie him to the Vicente Calderon club until 2021 and the press was filled with talk of disappointment for Europe’s top teams who had been hopeful of luring him away from Atleti.

Crucially though, Griezmann’s advisors negotiated just a small increase in his release clause to £85million, leaving the door open to a potential big-money transfer away from the Spanish capital.

United are not afraid of paying big fees. Jose Mourinho shelled out a world-record £89million to re-sign Paul Pogba from Juventus last year as he began the process of rebuilding the Old Trafford giants.
